THE Château de la grille

The origins of the Château de La Grille go back to the 15th century. The buildings surrounding the main courtyard on two sides bear witness to its early beginnings.

To the east, the southern face of an edifice is adjoined to a lodge with a hip roof and corbelled overhang.

To the west, an imposing quadrangular dovecot : in its walls, an oval in the large stones contains three curiously drilled loopholes for firearms.

THE Château de la grille

After Mr Duval, Sire de La Grille, Antoine Jean COUGNY, who was …., bought the Château in 1748. In 1848, it was Gustave de COUGNY, a historian famous for his work on the history and monuments of Chinon who became the owner. His family’s coat of arms can still be seen today on the Château walls.

He began its renovation and extension by erecting the chapel and the outbuildings. The renovation is in the Neo-Gothic or “Troubadour” style. The Château de La Grille has fine architectural examples of 14th and 15th century inspiration such as the square machicolated lodge, the polygonal towers, corbelled turrets and garret windows.

THE EXCEPTION of CHINON

The Château is one of the few in the Loire Valley surrounded by its own vineyards.

Beneath the buildings, visit the wine cellar which houses the oak barrels in which the wine from the Château patiently ages at just the right temperature.

A SPECIAL DAY

Take an hour to taste the wines of the Maison BAUDRY-DUTOUR, owner of the CHÂTEAU DE LA GRILLE, we will introduce you to the range in our CHINON appellation. Whites, rosés, and particularly reds, there is a wide choice and you will understand the influence of the terroir and the special climate of the Loire Valley.

You will discover our signature grape varieties : Chenin and Cabernet Franc.

A SPECIAL DAY

If you have a bit more time, you can stay for a few hours at the Château de La Grille. You can stroll freely through the grounds, a path around the estate complete with information panels is at your disposal.

To further the experience, we also offer a more comprehensive tour of the vineyard and the vinification plant. from the vine to the glass, we will explain how the wines of CHÂTEAU DE LA GRILLE are born … before getting you to taste them.

Wine tasting

In a contemporary setting, taste the most recent or mature vintages. Free wine tasting and direct sales. No booking required. From Tuesdays to Saturdays. From 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm.

Visiting

Located 20 minutes from the Château of Azay le Rideau, 15 minutes from the Château d’Ussé and 3 km from Chinon Castle, the Château de La Grille, a beautiful stop on the route of the Châteaux of the Loire Valley.

A guided tour of the grounds, of the vineyard and the winery followed by wine tasting.

Walks

Discover the grounds and the vines of the Château de La Grille. A path will enable you to walk around the estate and make the most of the atmosphere of La Grille and the work of the wine-growers.
