Visit Us A Château in the Loire Valley

For an hour, or a day, take a break at the Château de La Grille.

One of the few castles in the Loire Valley surrounded by its own vineyard.
Visit the vineyards and the park, enjoy the wine cellar to taste “l’Exception du Chinon.”
And discover the photography exhibition presented this year in the Chapel.

THE Château de la grille

The origins of Château de La Grille date back to the 15th century. The buildings enclosing the main courtyard on two sides are remnants of its original state.

After belonging to Monsieur Duvau, Sieur de La Grille, Antoine Jean Cougny, a royal advisor, acquired it in 1748. In 1848, it was Gustave de Cougny, a historian famous for his works on the history and monuments of Chinon, who became the owner. His family coat of arms can still be seen on the Château today.

THE Château de la grille

He undertook its renovation and expanded it by erecting the chapel and the outbuildings. The renovation follows the Neo-Gothic or “Troubadour” style. Château de La Grille features beautiful elements inspired by the 14th and 15th centuries, such as the square pavilion with machicolations, polygonal towers, other corbelled turrets, and dormer windows.

To the east, a building leans to the south on a pavilion topped with a four-sided roof over a final corbelled floor.

To the west, an imposing dovecote with a quadrangular plan stands. In its walls, large stones can be observed, where three gun loops in an oval shape have been curiously fashioned.

THE Chapel

“Dans l’œil de Frère Jean”, a Poetic Stroll by Bernard Plossu (photographer) and Michel Butor (writer).

In 1993, the Centre Permanent d’Initiatives pour l’Environnement (CPIE) Touraine Val de Loire commissioned photographer Bernard Plossu and writer Michel Butor to create a series of photographs and texts on the theme of Rabelais. Following their journey through the sensitive and literary landscape of the author, they presented the series “In the Eye of Brother Jean.”

THE EXCEPTION of CHINON

The homogeneity of this distinctive terroir, combined with the high standards and a remarkable bottle, make Château de La Grille “the exception of Chinon.”

The Château de La Grille winery is equipped with everything needed to vinify the Château’s production under optimal conditions. After aging for 12 to 15 months in barrels, the wine is bottled in 18th-century-style Champagne bottles, which have become the signature of Château de La Grille.
